It is produced by heating limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) at high temperatures in a process called calcination, which drives off carbon dioxide. Preparation Process: Calcium oxide (CaO) is prepared by the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) in a process called calcination. Crushed limestone (mainly CaCO₃) is heated in a kiln at temperatures between 900–1200°C. The reaction proceeds as: CaCO₃(s) → CaO(s) + CO₂(g). The high temperature drives off carbon dioxide, leaving behind solid calcium oxide. The process requires efficient heat transfer and proper ventilation to remove CO₂. The resulting CaO is cooled and may be crushed or ground into a fine powder. Impurities like silica or alumina may remain, depending on the limestone purity. Industrial production uses rotary or shaft kilns for continuous operation.
