What is Geraniol

Geraniol is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid and a key component of essential oils derived from various plants, including roses, geraniums, and citronella. Known for its pleasant, floral aroma, geraniol is widely used in the fragrance and flavoring industries to create perfumes, cosmetics, and food products. Beyond its sensory appeal, geraniol exhibits significant biological properties, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects, making it a valuable ingredient in pharmaceuticals and natural remedies. Additionally, it is used as a natural insect repellent, particularly against mosquitoes. With its versatile applications and eco-friendly profile, geraniol is a sought-after compound in both industrial and consumer markets.

Preparation Process: Geraniol is typically prepared through the fractional distillation of essential oils such as rose oil, citronella oil, or palmarosa oil, where it occurs naturally. Alternatively, it can be synthesized via the hydrolysis of geranyl acetate, which is obtained by esterifying linalool or myrcene. Another method involves the isomerization of linalool in the presence of acidic catalysts. Industrial production often employs the pyrolysis of β-pinene to yield myrcene, followed by reaction with lithium dialkylcuprate to form geraniol. A chemical synthesis route includes the reduction of citral using sodium borohydride or hydrogenation over a palladium catalyst. Purification is achieved through vacuum distillation.

Usage Scenarios: Geraniol is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid alcohol found in essential oils of rose, citronella, and palmarosa. It is widely used in the fragrance industry for its floral, rose-like scent, enhancing perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics. In flavoring, it adds a sweet, fruity note to foods and beverages. Geraniol also serves as a precursor in the synthesis of other aroma compounds, such as citronellol and menthol. Additionally, it exhibits insect-repellent properties, making it useful in eco-friendly pest control products. Research explores its potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects, though further studies are needed for therapeutic applications. Its versatility extends to use in biofuels and as a green solvent.

Section 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
  EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause eye irritation.
Skin:
May cause skin irritation.
Ingestion:
May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient oxygenation of the blood), weakness, acidosis, and shock.
Human fatalities have been reported from acute poisoning.
Inhalation:
May cause respiratory tract irritation.
Chronic:
No information found.

Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. If irritation develops, get medical aid.
Skin:
Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion:
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
  General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Containers may explode in the heat of a fire.
Extinguishing Media:
In case of fire, use water, dry chemical, chemical foam, or alcohol-resistant foam. Use agent most appropriate to extinguish fire. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out.

Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Provide ventilation.

Section 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE
  Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place. Keep container closed when not in use.

Section 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION
