Introduction
Mercury is a metallic element, commonly known as quicksilver. Its chemical symbol is Hg, its atomic number is 80, and it belongs to Group IIB of the periodic table. It has a melting point of -38.87°C, a boiling point of 356.6°C, and a density of 13.59 g/cm³. Mercury is a shiny, silvery-white, heavy liquid and the only metal that exists in liquid form at room temperature and pressure. While mercury is chemically stable at room temperature, its vapor and compounds are often highly toxic (chronically). Mercury can dissolve many metals (such as gold and silver) to form mercury alloys (also called amalgams).
Uses
It is used in the manufacture of mercury salts and amalgams, in organic synthesis, and as a reducing agent.
