Anisole, sometimes referred to as anise ether or methoxybenzene methyl phenyl ether, is a colorless liquid with a sweet, anise-smelling aroma that is found naturally in tarragon oil. It is insoluble in water but soluble in acetone, alcohol, ether, and benzene. It irritates mucous membranes and the eyes. Anisole is a solvent used in large-scale processes like perfumery and the synthesis of chemical molecules. It is employed in the preparation of perfumes and enteral pesticides as well as in the analysis of reagents and solvents. The nonylphenol isomer 4-(3',6'-dimethyl-3-heptyl)phenol and the marine pyrrole alkaloids polycitone A and B have both been synthesized directly from anisole. They serve as organic synthesis intermediates, fillings for thermostats, solvents for recrystallization, and tools for detecting refractive index. Anisole has acute toxicity.
