Preparation Process: To prepare methyl salicylate, mix salicylic acid (10 g) with excess methanol (25 mL) in a round-bottom flask. Add concentrated sulfuric acid (2 mL) as a catalyst. Reflux the mixture at 65–70°C for 2 hours to ensure esterification. After cooling, neutralize the acidic mixture with sodium bicarbonate solution (5%) to pH 7–8. Extract the product using diethyl ether (20 mL × 3), then wash the combined organic layers with water and brine. Dry over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filter, and evaporate the solvent under reduced pressure. The remaining liquid is crude methyl salicylate, which can be purified by distillation (bp 220–224°C).

  EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause eye irritation.
Skin:
Causes moderate skin irritation. May be absorbed through the skin in harmful amounts.
Ingestion:

Section 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
  General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Vapors can travel to a source of ignition and flash back.
